UACCM Student Student Development Personal Counseling

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the office of Student Development located?

UACCM office of Student Development is located in the Business Technology Center (BTC), Room 208. However, we ask that students coming to see us come through the Advising Center BTC 200 to check in or make an appointment.

How do I make an appointment?

Appointments can be made in person by coming to the office of Student Development, by phone, or by email. Simply let our Administrative Specialist know that you’d like to schedule a personal counseling appointment. You’ll be asked some very basic questions (nothing too personal) and assigned an appointment based upon your schedule as well as the counselor’s schedule. Appointments are typically scheduled every hour on the hour from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, the office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  All appointments are free of charge to students.

Why do people seek personal counseling at UACCM and what happens when you get there?

Counseling can help students cope more effectively with many problems that arise in daily life, including some that may interfere with academic progress. Students bring a wide range of issues to counseling, and anything which is a concern to a student is important. Some experiences frequently brought to counseling include stress, relationship problems, anxiety, grief, depression, coping with transitions, and many others. The counseling process involves a relationship between you and a counselor who will help you clarify your feelings, make your own decisions, and resolve your concerns. Your counselor will not give you advice, judge you, make decisions for you, or force you to talk about anything. Your counselor will actively listen and help you find solutions to your concerns in a way that fits your values.

Who may use personal counseling services at UACCM

Current UACCM students are eligible for personal counseling services. Partners of students may also be seen but only as part of couple counseling.

Does it cost anything to meet with a UACCM counselor?

No. All our counseling services are free to students. There are no counseling fees for currently enrolled UACCM students.

Do my parents or instructors have to know that I am in counseling?

No. Federal and state law prohibits us from acknowledging that you are a client or disclosing any file information with your parent or anyone else without your specific written permission. It occasionally happens, however, that our clients find it very helpful for their counselors to speak with a parent or a faculty member. With your written permission, your counselor will speak to others in helping you reach your counseling goals. Also, nothing which occurs in counseling becomes a part of your university record. If you are a student under the age of 18, we will ask that you get a form signed by a parent/guardian before obtaining counseling. The form may be picked up in BTC 200.

What happens if I run into my counselor on campus or somewhere else?

You might run into your counselor on campus or while out in public. Your counselor will not acknowledge you. This doesn’t mean that he/she is mad or doesn’t like you; it is merely to protect your privacy. Your counselor will inform you about confidentiality and his/her limits to confidentiality during your first meeting. Do not hesitate to ask questions.
