Verification of Non Tax Filing

If a student filed the FAFSA as independent (not using parent information) and didn’t file taxes in 2020, they will have to turn in proof of non-filing as detailed below.

If a student filed the FAFSA as independent (not using parent information), is married, and their spouse did not file taxes in 2020, the spouse will have to turn in proof of non-filing as detailed below.

If a student who filed the FAFSA as dependent (using parent information), and their parent(s) didn’t file taxes in 2020, the student’s parent(s) will have to turn in proof of non-filing as detailed below.

Non-tax filers must provide a confirmation of non-filing dated on or after October 1, 2020. A confirmation of non-filing can be obtained through one of the following methods:

  • www.irs.gov, Get Your Tax Record, Get Transcript by Mail, request a Tax Return Transcript from 2020 (you will receive a letter stating they were unable to supply the information as you did not file in 2020 with in 5-10 business days), OR
  • Use the IRS Form 4506-T, complete with no misprints, and check box 7, question 9 will be 12/31/2020, and check the signatory attests box above the signature (available here www.uaccm.edu/financial_aid/forms.html.) You can fax this form in, but we also recommend you mail it as the IRS sometimes rejects a faxed form. It can take a month or more to receive a form using this method.
