Proof of Independent Status

You are required to submit certain documents to the Financial Aid Office to prove that you are eligible if you stated on the FAFSA that you fall under one of the categories listed below.  If the documents submitted do not prove you were eligible for that circumstance, you will be required to correct the question on the FAFSA and in most cases enter parent(s) information on the FASFA.  Please talk to the Financial Aid staff if you feel you should not enter parent(s) information on the FAFSA.

You are currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training (note: basic training does not count for this purpose) Copy of your latest DD214 from the military with active duty days
You are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces Copy of your latest DD214 from the military
You are a graduate or professional student
At any time since you turned age 13, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care or were you a dependent or ward of the court? Either:
  • Copy of birth certificate with both parents listed and copies of death certificates for both parents (if you were adopted, you will need to report your adopted parents on the FAFSA)
  • Court or DHS documents detailing foster care or dependent/ward of court
As determined by a court in your state of legal residence, are you or were you an emancipated minor? Court documents of your emancipation
Does someone other than your parent or stepparent have legal guardianship of you, as determined by a court in your state of legal residence? Court documents detailing legal guardianship
At any time on or after July 1, 2020, did your high school or school district homeless liaison determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless or were self-supporting and at risk of being homeless? Letter from homeless liaison at high school (on letterhead)
At any time on or after July 1, 2020, did the director of an emergency shelter or transitional housing program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless or were self-supporting and at risk of being homeless?

At any time on or after July 1, 2020, did the director of a runaway or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless or were self-supporting and at risk of being homeless?
