Rules

How do I enter?

Correctly formatted entries must be placed in one manila envelope and mailed to this address:

Each entry must be stapled together with a title page that contains the following information:

  • The writer’s name, phone number, mailing address, and email address.
  • The submission’s title and the category to which it belongs.

A check for the entry fee or fees must also be placed in the envelope.

Topic?

Here is a chance for writers to let creativity run loose. Each writer chooses his or her own topic.

Length Requirements?

Poems should fall somewhere between 8 and 50 lines.

Short stories need to run from 4 to 15 pages.

Essays should be from 3 to 6 pages.

All submissions must be typed and double spaced, using a standard 12 point font like Times New Roman, Ariel, or Calibri.  The margins should be one inch, and each entry should have a header that includes the writer’s last name and the page number.

How long will the contest run?

Submissions will be accepted through March 31, 2009. Winners will be announced during the first week of May by mail, e-mail, and on the UACCM Web site.

What criteria Will the Judges Use?

Submissions will be evaluated by UACCM English faculty members using the following criteria:

  • Creativity
  • Impact
  • Command of genre
  • Fluency in mechanics and conventions of writing

What are the prizes?

Each category will receive a first place prize of $100, and from those three winners, the judges will choose a best in contest winner who will receive a three-hour tuition waiver in addition to the first place prize of $100.  A contestant can win in one area only. The tuition waiver is non-transferrable and non-refundable.  In addition, the waiver must be used within one calendar year of the award date.  For example, the winner will be notified in May 2009, so he or she will have until the end of May 2010.

How will the winners be announced?

In addition to being notified by mail or email, the winners will be posted on the college’s Web site.

What happens to entries after the contest?

The winning entry will be published on our Web site and in local papers.  Other entries will be shredded, so each writer should be sure to keep his or her own copies.

Who May Enter?

The contest is open to any writer who is high school age or older.

Why Writing Contest?

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honor society for two-year colleges, has chosen to sponsor a writing contest for two reasons:  to encourage and reward writing and  to raise funds for local PTK scholarships.

Cost

Writers must pay a $7 entry fee for the first submission and $5 for each following submission.  The writers may enter as many submissions as they choose.

Topics

Here is a chance for writers to let their creativity loose.  Each writer chooses his or her own topic.  We will even take poems about cats!
