Application Process

Applying for a part-time job is less formal than applying for a professional full-time job.  Oftentimes employers want applicants to visit the business in person and fill out a job application form.

To correctly complete a job application form, all information must be current and accurate.  This information often includes your past work history and employment dates, the names and complete addresses and phone numbers of former employers and personal references.  Complete addresses of the schools you have attended along with dates of graduation are usually required.

Your ability to immediately provide this information to the employer might increase your odds of being interviewed for a part-time job on the spot, giving you an edge over the less prepared applicants.

Fill Out the Job Application in Person

First, it shows that you are prepared and serious about your job search.  Second, the employer knows that you can read and write legibly.  Finally, you might be able to submit the application to the person directly responsible for hiring and turn the opportunity into an interview.

Your Part-time Job Search Strategy

When looking for a part-time job, it pays to be organized.  Many job seekers find it helpful to keep a job search journal or file to track the employers that have been contacted.

After you fill out the job application or have an interview, enter the following information into your job search journal: the date you made contact or filled out the application, the name of the business, the address, the name of the manager or owner, and their phone number.  Include the date you will contact the employer again and the mutually agreed upon method of follow-up.  You will need to ask each employer when they would like you to follow up and the method, for example, by phone, email, or in person.

If making cold calls, move on to the next employer or follow the next job lead.  The more contacts you make, the more likely you will find a part-time job.

When applying in person for part-time jobs, business casual dress is appropriate.  Be flexible with your time, and be prepared for an immediate interview.  Know your class schedule and what days and times you would be available to work.
