MUS 1001L | University Singers I

Prerequisites: None. This course is open to all UACCM students. It is a choral group designed to be a stepping stone for novice music majors and a personal enrichment elective for non-majors. (GE)

MUS 1003 | Music Fundamentals

3 Cr. (1 Lec., 2 Lab)
Prerequisites: None. This course is designed to provide students who have little or no background in music the foundation they will need for further music study. Concepts included are: reading pitch and rhythm, basic music notation, playing a melody instrument, rudimentary ear training, music composition, music listening skills, and rudimentary music theory concepts including scales, harmony, dynamics, and tempo. MUS 1011L | Concert Choir I

1 Cr. (4 Lab)
Prerequisites: Audition and consent of instructor. This course is an auditioned choral ensemble that is designed to fulfill the ensemble requirements for music majors and/or serve as a personal enrichment course for a qualified non-major. This group of mixed voices performs music from a variety of periods and styles. This course may be repeated for additional credit. (GE)

MUS 1021L | Soundscape I

Prerequisites: Audition and consent of instructor. Soundscape is a small auditioned vocal ensemble that performs a variety of music including: pop, jazz, Broadway, classical and country. This group serves as the public relations arm of the music department. Membership in this ensemble will require significant performance time outside of regularly scheduled class. (GE)

Prerequisite: Concurrently enrolled in MUS 1011, MUS 1111, MUS 2011, or MUS 2111 and instructor’s interview. Offered in the fall and spring semesters. Individualized study designed to instruct students in vocal principles of proper singing. Concepts include application of proper breathing, phrasing, and general attributes of vocal production. MUS 1211L | Voice II

Prerequisites: Concurrently enrolled in MUS 1011, MUS 1111, MUS 2011, or MUS 2111 and instructor’s interview. Offered in the fall and spring semesters. This course is a continuation of MUS 1201 Voice I. Individualized study designed to instruct students in vocal principles of proper singing. Concepts include application of proper breathing, phrasing, and general attributes of vocal production. (30 minute lab) (GE)

MUS 1301L | Class Piano I

1 Cr. (2 Lab)
Prerequisite: Instructor Interview. Introduction to basic piano skills designed for non-keyboard music majors and non-music majors. The objective of this course is to develop functional keyboard skills that will enable students to cope with practical situations at the keyboard including: sight reading, harmonization, accompanying, transposition, improvisation, and other creative activity. MUS 1311L | Class Piano II

1 Cr. (2 Lab)
Prerequisites: Successful completion of MUS 1301 Class Piano I with a “C” or better or acceptable score on piano placement exam and instructor interview. This course is a continuation of Class Piano I. Introduction to basic piano skills designed for non-keyboard music majors and non-music majors. The objective of this course is to develop functional keyboard skills that will enable students to cope with practical situations at the keyboard including sight reading, harmonization, accompanying, transposition, improvisation and other creative activity. MUS 1402 | Ear Training I

2 Cr. (1 Lec., 2 Lab)
Prerequisites: MUS 1003 Music Fundamentals with a “C” or better or a passing score on the Music Theory Placement Exam and concurrently enrolled in MUS 1502 Harmony I. Ear Training I is designed to develop and improve aural skills and general musicality. It will closely parallel concepts and skills learned in Harmony I. (GE)

MUS 1412 | Ear Training II

2 Cr. (1 Lec., 2 Lab)
Prerequisites: MUS 1402 Ear Training I and MUS 1502 Harmony I with a grade of “C” or better and concurrently enrolled in MUS 1512 Harmony II. Ear Training II is a continuation of MUS 1042 and is designed to develop and improve aural skills and general musicality. It will closely parallel skills learned in Harmony 2. (GE)

MUS 1502 | Harmony I

2 Cr. (1 Lec., 2 Lab)
Prerequisites: MUS 1003 Music Fundamentals with a “C” or better or passing score on Music Theory Placement Exam and concurrently enrolled in MUS 1402 Ear Training I. Harmony I is designed to introduce beginning concepts in music theory. The course must be taken concurrently with Ear Training I. (GE)

MUS 1512 | Harmony II

2 Cr. (1 Lec., 2 Lab)
Prerequisites: MUS 1402 Ear Training I and MUS 1502 Harmony I with a grade of “C” or better and concurrently enrolled in MUS 1412 Earn Training II. Harmony II is a continuation of MUS 1502. (GE)

This course is an introductory survey of music including the study of elements and forms of music, selected musical works, music terminology, important musical genres, periods, and composers, as well as introduction to major musical instruments.
